Pike Jigging from a Boat: Power Setup for Deep-Water Predators
Boat jigging for pike means targeting fish that hold on drop-offs, humps and weed edges at 4–12 m, often the largest pike in the system. Unlike zander fishing, here the setup must survive two things: violent close-range strikes and a mouth full of razor teeth. Power and insurance come first, finesse second.
The rod should be 7'0"–7'6", 15–45 g, fast action, with a strong backbone — you will set hooks into thick jaw cartilage and then stop a 5+ kg fish before it reaches the snags. A 2500–3000-size reel with a genuinely smooth drag (8+ kg max) absorbs the head-shakes and short brutal runs that pike make under the boat.
The leader is where pike jigging differs from everything else. Titanium wire of 7–12 kg, or at minimum 0.40 mm fluorocarbon changed frequently, is mandatory — pike slice straight through thin fluoro and braid. Use big profile softbaits: 4–5 inch shads and vib-tails that push water and let a lethargic deep-water pike find the lure by vibration.
